Sofitel Le Sphinx, Cairo…Not up to snuff
I know I haven’t yet written about Vic Falls (or posted the major portion of Zanzibar, which I will), but I have to call out the hotel I’m at. I’ll get back to journal entries soon enough. So, here’s the bitch fest.
I arrived here very early yesterday morning. I had previously been assured an early check-in would be available for such a good customer. I’ve stayed at Sofitel hotels around the world – they’re a known quantity to me and generally offer terrific value for the money. They are in general at least 4 stars, if not 5.
Not only did the check-in clerk take about 45 minutes to find my room, he did so while generally ignoring me. He was kibbitzing with his colleagues, fucking around otherwise, whatever. A check-in should take 5 minutes. Not only did it take forever, they didn’t have a room with a king-size bed available. So, they said they’ll give me a double room until a king room was available later in the day. Fine, I can deal.
What they put me in was a nightmare. The room was falling apart. Moldy, gross, paint pealing, etc. The service by the staff is awful. Takes an hour to get a power adapter sent to the room? Takes 10 hours to get my proper room available? I get back from the Pyramids today after nine hours of being out of my room and it wasn’t made it?
What am I paying for? Laziness, it seems. And rude on top. Only a few of the staff here are worth a damn. Worthless. At least I have a view of the Pyramids from my room…Oh, wait, that’s slave labor!
By the way, taxi driver drops me off yesterday from the airport and I pay him. He says, “No tip?” I point to the pyramids, “That’s my tip.”
